Ortaylı's response to the austerity measures was: "I never believe in such things. There is such a passion for opulence in the bureaucracy in Turkey that it is a disgrace."

"No one will allow the slaughter of animals. They should not try to explain this matter through ideology. People from all walks of life are animal lovers."
