Incident at Cannes Film Festival: Police intervene

The 77th Cannes Film Festival's opening ceremony was the scene of a protest by film industry workers.

According to a report by Le Figaro, famous names from the world of cinema attended the opening ceremony of the 77th edition of the festival at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

While celebrities were walking the red carpet, a group of members from the "Poverty Behind the Screens (Sous les Ecrans la Deche)" collective, consisting of film workers, climbed onto the roof of the Festival Palace and unfurled a banner.

A group of approximately 20 protesters also whistled and chanted slogans to draw the attention of the festival crowd.

POLICE INTERVENED

Police intervened against the film industry workers who were protesting for improved working conditions.

One week before the festival's opening, the "Poverty Behind the Screens" collective had called for a strike that could "disrupt the event," covering both festival staff and other film industry workers.

Workers employed on contract for film festivals and those in the cinema sector negatively affected by the French unemployment insurance reform are demanding improvements to their working conditions.
