Portrait of George Dyer by Bacon to be sold at auction in London
The portrait in which Francis Bacon depicted his 'muse' George Dyer is being put up for auction at Sotheby's in London for the first time since Dyer's suicide. The painting is expected to fetch at least 5 million pounds.
The painting 'Study of George Dyer', in which the master of Expressionism Francis Bacon depicted his great love George Dyer, is being put up for auction by Sotheby's 50 years later as part of a modern and contemporary art sale.
AT LEAST 5 MILLION POUNDS BID EXPECTED
According to a report by The Guardian, the painting, which is said to carry all the hallmarks of Bacon's best works, is estimated to fetch between 5 million and 7 million pounds at the auction to be held in London next month.
The work, which could be a turning point in Bacon's artistic career, is remembered in the shadow of a tragedy that followed him for many years.
HIS LOVER COMMITTED SUICIDE
Bacon had learned that his lover, Dyer, had committed suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol in their hotel room 36 hours before the exhibition where he was to debut this work, which he had carefully selected for his retrospective and which is rumored to be a portrait of the love of his life.
HIS WORKS FREQUENTLY MAKE HEADLINES
The paintings of the famous British painter Francis Bacon also frequently make headlines due to their sale prices at auctions.
The painter's 1969 'Three Studies of Lucian Freud' also sold for 142 million 405 thousand dollars at an auction held in New York in 2013.
