Shipwrecks dating back to pre-Christian era discovered

In a statement released by the Greek Ministry of Culture, it was reported that 10 shipwrecks from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval, and Ottoman periods were discovered as part of extensive underwater archaeological research conducted off the coast of Kasos in the southern Aegean.

The statement noted that the wrecks, which belonged to ships carrying goods from the coasts of Spain, Italy, and Africa, date back to between 3000 BC and 300 AD, and that the research team from the National Hellenic Research Foundation has carried out four research missions on the island in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture since 2019.

The statement further indicated that the findings include objects such as ceramic bottles from the Roman period, a stone anchor from the Archaic period, and a Spanish amphora dating to 150-170 AD.

It was announced that the research will be turned into a documentary and screened at leading international archaeological film festivals.
