Teoman has written a novel: Dear Mr. Rock Star
Singer Teoman's second book will hit the shelves at the end of May under the title 'Dear Mr. Rock Star' (Sayın Bay Rock Yıldızı). In his novel, which focuses on a 27-year-old rock star named Timur, Teoman said, "This is a fragmentary novel. I tried to write a comedy-drama. The protagonist of this book is not Teoman, but Timur."
The details of the novel by Teoman, the owner of unforgettable albums such as 'Gönülçelen', 'Renkli Rüyalar Oteli', 'Aşk ve Gurur', 'İnsanlık Halleri', and '17', which has been in preparation for some time, have been revealed.
The book will meet readers at the end of May under the Doğan Kitap label.
Teoman described his novel, titled 'Dear Mr. Rock Star', with the words: ''A character crawling with the dream of becoming an artist, a rock star, a songwriter. He resembles me too.''
The full text penned by the singer for the book's foreword is as follows:
''For years we followed his every move, memorized his songs, watched his music videos and perhaps his films with excitement, read his life story, loved or didn't love his decisions, but our curiosity about him never faded… Teoman is now ready to surprise his followers with his first novel. Do not be misled by the title of the book and think it is not a novel. The protagonist of this book is not Teoman, but Timur…
''Hello :)
Dear Mr. Rock Star is my first novel.
I had created a musical persona in my songs. I used that musical persona in the novel as well.
Something like an alter ego.
His name is not Teoman, but Timur.
Because both the one in my songs and the one in this novel are fictional characters. He resembles me, but he is not me. I am actually a boring person. I am not someone like the hero in the novel. At least, not anymore :) I am a planned person now :)
My purpose in differentiating him from myself is that I want my heroes in my songs -and in this novel- to be more interesting :) I also made the hero 46 years old. Between the ages of 40-50, it is the most difficult time for a man. Then it gets easier somehow :)
This is a fragmentary novel. I tried to write a comedy-drama. A character who drinks day and night -I was never such a person-, who cannot adapt to the new world while aging, who has completely lost his footing with the change of his old world, and who has also lost himself in the process. A confused guy :) Because he is constantly high, he is someone who cannot establish a connection with reality. A rock star who thinks he is forced to be someone else constantly due to loneliness, who no longer knows who he is, and who cannot keep up with the era he lives in.
I made him a very lonely character. Someone who lives by himself. He only has one friend. This person could have been a non-rock star. These feelings could have been felt in any profession, but it was useful for me to use the fake-balloon side of rock stardom. Because I know that world well. I wrote such a novel because I wanted being a rock star in Turkey, rather than in the West, to add a comedy element on its own.
At the same time, Timur is someone who suffers a lot from depression. Like almost all individuals of our age. I tried to constantly increase his depression, to lead it towards major depression in my novel, based on boredom and meaninglessness. I know those sides from my own life :) Boredom, meaninglessness, and depression go hand in hand for me :) I overcome my troubles in life with humor. I wrote this novel with those feelings as well.
If you have the opportunity, I would be happy if you also listen to my latest album, “Ben, Zargana, Deus ex Machina”. I made that album by keeping the drama tone very high with similar feelings. Same theme, different approach, for the album and the novel. I hope it will also help to understand the novel well :)
Woody Allen and Milan Kundera were people who greatly influenced my life at university. If my album “Ben, Zargana….” is a Bergman film, this novel is a Woody Allen film. Same themes, different perspectives. Woody Allen’s films “Deconstructing Harry”, “Celebrity”, and “Stardust Memories” are the sources of inspiration for this novel.
The Timur character I created is actually a misanthrope. Someone who cannot even stand himself.
Following this novel, another one of mine will be released. I have already started writing it. “1994 Was a Terrible Year.” It tells the story of the Timur character at age 27. A character crawling with the dream of becoming an artist, a rock star, a songwriter. He also resembles me. The young version of himself in the current novel, who believes in art and music very much. That will also be fiction, of course. I had already published my autobiography under the title Fasa Fiso. I want to make a trilogy with these two novels.''
