Avalanche disaster in Erzurum's Palandöken
An avalanche disaster has occurred on Mount Palandöken in Erzurum.
An avalanche struck while the National Judo Team, which was conducting a high-altitude camp on Mount Palandöken in Erzurum, was climbing in the Sultan Sekisi region.
AFAD, UMKE, gendarmerie, and fire department teams were dispatched to the area due to the avalanche. Security measures have been tightened in the region against the risk of a second avalanche.
Citizens located in the facilities at the ski resort and those skiing on the slopes were directed to safe areas.
STATEMENT FROM THE ERZURUM GOVERNOR'S OFFICE
Erzurum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi made a statement regarding the tragedy. In the statement, he announced that the person who lost his life was 16-year-old Emre Yazgan.
Governor Çiftçi used the following expressions in his statement:
"Around 10 o'clock, our Youth National Judo Team, a group of 11 people, went out for a nature hike, but an avalanche occurred at that time. 4 of our athletes were trapped under the avalanche. 3 of them managed to get out on their own, but our 16-year-old athlete lost his life."
