Bricks falling from mosque wall claim a life

Bricks falling from mosque wall claim a life

In the Gördes district of Manisa, Mevlüt Altungeyik lost his life and İbrahim Kara was injured after brick and plaster fragments broke off from the wall above the mihrab and fell on them at the mosque they had visited to perform evening prayers.

The incident occurred yesterday during evening prayers at the mosque in the rural Kobaklar neighborhood of Gördes. After finishing the prayer, Mevlüt Altungeyik and İbrahim Kara were examining the wall above the mihrab when the plaster and brick fragments broke off and fell on them.

While Altungeyik and Kara were injured, medical teams were dispatched to the mosque upon notification. The injured were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Mevlüt Altungeyik, one of the two injured individuals receiving treatment, passed away this morning.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY INTO POSSIBLE LINK TO EARTHQUAKE

It has been reported that an investigation has been launched into the incident, and authorities are looking into whether the damage to the upper part of the mosque's mihrab is related to the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred yesterday in the Sındırgı district.
