BTK research on gaming addiction and cyberbullying: One in every 3 children...
The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) has published the Report on Digital Gaming Habits of Middle and High School Students in Turkey. The data in the report drew attention.
The research, conducted in collaboration with the Information and Communication Technologies Authority's Safer Internet Center and Muş Alparslan University, was led by Dr. Abdulkerim Gün, Vice President of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority.
A total of 20,384 students participated in the research conducted by the BTK Safer Internet Center, including 11,891 middle school students and 8,493 high school students. Within the scope of the research, students' digital gaming addiction, internet addiction, social media addiction, happiness levels, cyberbullying experiences, distress-stress levels, and feelings of loneliness were examined.
STUDENTS PLAY GAMES FOR NEARLY 3 HOURS A DAY
Many striking results were reached in the study. According to the research, it was concluded that 95.49% of students own a mobile phone and play digital games for nearly three hours on weekdays.
ONE IN EVERY 3 CHILDREN IS AT RISK OF GAMING ADDICTION
Another important result highlighted in the research was that 35% of high school and middle school students are at risk of gaming addiction. Similarly, it was determined that 31% of high school students and 20% of middle school students are at risk of internet addiction.
Significant findings were also reached regarding the increasingly prevalent issue of social media addiction. The research stated that 50% of high school students and 35% of middle school students are at risk of social media addiction, and it was noted that due to technological factors, one-quarter of high school students have low levels of happiness.
CYBERBULLYING
Another result revealed by the research is that with the increase in internet usage, 10% of students are exposed to moderate levels of cyberbullying, while high levels of cyberbullying are rarely seen.
The research stated that feelings of loneliness are common among middle and high school students, and it was determined that the level of distress found in high school students is higher than that of middle school students.
