CHP's 'Constitution' question to AKP: 'At the 2023 symposium...'
CHP Deputy Chair Gökçe Gökçen asked, "Did you or did you not discuss changing the first three articles of the Constitution at the Presidential symposium held on September 12, 2023?"
Following the targeting of Article 4 of the Constitution by HÜDA PAR Chairman Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu, known for his proximity to Hezbollah, a new debate has begun on the political agenda between the government and the opposition.
AKP Spokesperson Ömer Çelik had stated in his remarks on the matter, "We have no discussion whatsoever regarding the four articles of the Constitution. Proposals for changes to these articles are not acceptable to us."
Following Çelik's statement, CHP Deputy Chair and İzmir MP Gökçe Gökçen put forward a striking claim.
Gökçen recalled the 'Constitution of 2023 Instead of 1982' symposium organized by the Presidency at the Ulucanlar Prison Museum on September 12, 2023, and alleged that changing the first three articles of the Constitution was discussed at that symposium.
"TARGETING THE FIRST THREE ARTICLES IS NO COINCIDENCE"
Gökçe Gökçen's statement is as follows:
"A new constitution cannot be made with those who do not abide by the Constitution. Constitutional amendments cannot be discussed with those who throw Constitutional Court rulings into the trash, or with those who dream of paving a new path for one person's political career through legal engineering. Those who view the Republic as if it were limited only to the existence of an election, those who target Republican values, and those who are uncomfortable even hearing the name of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk are following an agenda. A dirty alliance is not just targeting constitutional principles; it is dynamiting every element that holds society together. This dirty alliance aims to narrow rights and freedoms in the constitution and make judicial oversight even more ineffective. This dirty alliance is working on a project that will expand its own sphere of power while narrowing the public's sphere of freedom. In this order, which suddenly brings together those who appear to be at opposite ends, the targeting of the first three articles is no coincidence. Those who portray the event as if it were merely a simple difference of opinion must answer this question: Did you or did you not discuss changing the first three articles of the Constitution at the Presidential symposium dated September 12, 2023?"
