War rouses Europe: Support for Israel, backlash against Hamas
European countries and institutions have issued messages of support for Israel while reacting to the operation launched by Hamas.
The armed wing of Hamas launched hundreds of rockets against Israel on Saturday morning, ending the ceasefire reached after the clashes in May. Along with the attack, numerous armed Hamas militants entered Israel. While the Israeli army declared a "state of war," it was reported that at least 22 Israelis lost their lives in the Hamas attacks. The attack launched by Hamas against Israel, followed by Israel's declaration of 'war,' has turned the world's eyes to the region. European leaders and institutions have also issued harsh statements against Hamas.
European Council President Charles Michel stated on the social media platform X, "I strongly condemn the indiscriminate attacks launched against Israel and its people this morning, inflicting terror and violence upon innocent citizens."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also condemned Hamas, stating, "Israel has the right to defend itself against such heinous attacks."
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell shared the message, "I stand in full solidarity with Israel."
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz remarked, "We are shaken by the rocket fire from Gaza and the escalating violence. Germany condemns these attacks by Hamas and stands by Israel."
French President Emmanuel Macron stated, "I strongly condemn the terrorist attacks currently striking Israel. I express my full solidarity with the victims, their families, and those close to them."
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that he was "shocked" by the attacks on Israeli "civilians." Sunak added, "Israel has an absolute right to defend itself."
Officials from Belgium, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Croatia, Austria, Greece, Czechia, Slovenia, Finland, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Kosovo also issued messages condemning Hamas and supporting Israel.
