Hüda Kaya detained at Istanbul Airport

As part of an investigation launched by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, former HDP Istanbul MP Hüda Kaya was detained at Istanbul Airport under the instructions of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

It was learned that an investigation had been opened against Kaya on charges of "insisting on not dispersing despite warnings and the use of force while participating in an unlawful assembly or demonstration, and resisting to prevent the performance of duty."

STATEMENT FROM LAWYER

Following the detention, Hüda Kaya's lawyer, Zilan Leventoğlu, stated that a 'fugitive' status decision had been issued against Kaya.

The statement made by lawyer Zilan Leventoğlu via Hüda Kaya's official social media account on X/Twitter is as follows:

''Hüda Kaya was detained in an unfair and arbitrary manner at Istanbul Airport, where she was present to attend a program abroad. Despite being reachable for months and residing at her home address, a fugitive status decision was issued by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

Following the unlawful issuance of the fugitive status decision against Hüda Kaya on September 27, we appealed this decision. Despite stating both verbally and in writing multiple times that she was not a fugitive, that she was reachable at her residence, that her phones were open, and that she was always ready to provide a statement, and despite her having gone to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to provide a statement recently, and despite her speaking with the prosecutor's office clerk and saying she could come to Ankara if necessary and was ready to provide a statement and that the fugitive status decision should be lifted, the decision was not lifted, and Hüda Kaya's desire to provide a statement was arbitrarily blocked.

As a result, today, even though our client Ms. Hüda Kaya had been at the airport for hours and her passport procedures had been completed without any issues, she was detained 10 minutes before the flight's departure in a completely arbitrary manner, with the statement that 'your departure is not possible.'

We leave this completely unfair, arbitrary, and unlawful process to the discretion of the public...''
