Identities of two victims in Filo Jet disaster confirmed
It has been announced that the two bodies recovered from the Filo Jet, which sank off the coast of Kyrenia, belong to Mahmut Demir and Özgür Gönül.
The identities of two bodies recovered during search operations following the sinking of the high-speed passenger ship "Filo Jet," which operated between Kyrenia Port in the TRNC and Taşucu Port in Mersin, have been confirmed.
In a statement issued by the TRNC Prime Ministry, it was reported that DNA testing for the two bodies found in recent days during operations off the coast of Kyrenia has been completed. As a result of the examinations, it was determined that the bodies belong to Mahmut Demir and Özgür Gönül.
The statement included the following: "We wish God's mercy upon Mahmut Demir and Özgür Gönül, and extend our condolences to their families and loved ones. We wish patience and fortitude to the families of the missing."
The Filo Jet began taking on water from its bow shortly after departing from Kyrenia on Sunday, August 30, and sank while attempting to return to port. 22 people lost their lives in the accident.
It was learned that the funeral of 20-year-old university student Özgür Gönül, one of the missing passengers whose body was recovered, will be held in the Tarsus district of Mersin following the noon prayer on October 8.
