İlber Ortaylı's take on the 'Common Turkic Alphabet': 'Before proposing an alphabet...'

The Common Turkic Alphabet Commission, established by the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), has reached a consensus on a proposal for a Common Turkic Alphabet consisting of 34 letters.

Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı evaluated the 'Common Turkic Alphabet' project in his column titled 'New alphabet' in Hürriyet.

"It is most appropriate to view the joint projects of Turkic states as scientific structures and to record them phonetically," said Ortaylı, adding, "However, to think that Turkish will be corrected and properly pronounced in this way, and especially to hope to achieve this through a bureaucratic structure, is ridiculous."

Ortaylı stated, "In this environment of impasse, before an alphabet proposal whose effectiveness is uncertain, let us strengthen the Turkish spoken in the media and used as the language of the press."
