İmamoğlu responds to Alper Yeğin's post: 'It bothered me'

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu made statements regarding the social security debts of municipalities during a press conference he held in Saraçhane.

Following his statements, İmamoğlu answered questions from journalists.

İmamoğlu was asked about the posts shared by Sancaktepe Mayor Alper Yeğin and Silivri Mayor Bora Balcıoğlu, which featured his own photo alongside the Presidential seal.

Expressing that he was bothered by the posts, İmamoğlu spoke as follows:

“First of all, I want them to focus on today's problems and the solutions in their districts. Our concern is not to determine the actors of an election 4 years from now. We will focus on our work today.

They should not get involved in these matters, they should not concern themselves with them. If they have any such feelings, they should forget them for now. Everything will be discussed when the time comes. It does not interest or flatter my spirit in the slightest; on the contrary, it has bothered me.”

WHAT HAPPENED?

While CHP leader Özgür Özel was speaking at a hazelnut rally in Giresun, Sancaktepe Mayor Alper Yeğin shared a photo of İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu featuring the Presidential seal.

Yeğin captioned his post on X, “The day will come, the cycle will turn, hope will arrive #TheSolutionIsClear #WeWillDefinitelySucceed.”

Following Yeğin, Silivri Mayor Bora Balcıoğlu also shared a photo of İmamoğlu with the Presidential seal, using the same expressions.

This post, in which two CHP mayors indicated that they support İmamoğlu as a candidate in the 2028 Presidential election, was widely discussed.

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır, while a guest on İpek Özbey's show on Sözcü TV last May, had said that CHP leader Özgür Özel would be a tougher opponent for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan than İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) Mayor Mansur Yavaş, stating, “If I were in his place, I wouldn't want to compete with Özgür Özel.”

CHP leader Özel, regarding the Presidential candidacy debates, compared İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and ABB Mayor Mansur Yavaş to strikers and used the following expressions:

“There are currently two strikers on the team... But many new figures are also shining. One is Mansur Yavaş, the other is Ekrem İmamoğlu. When the day comes, one of our friends will be the Presidential candidate.”
