Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu met with mayors and representatives from cities in the Middle East and North Africa under the theme of "peace and cooperation."
Hosting the event, IMM Mayor İmamoğlu also made assessments regarding the developments in Syria.
Stating, "We are ready to support Syrians who want to return and rebuild their country," İmamoğlu said the following:
"Great responsibilities fall upon us, the local administrators. Istanbul, which currently hosts nearly 2 million Syrian citizens, is determined to provide the highest level of support to Syria in the social and economic development of cities emerging from war. Syrians who left their loved ones, homes, and all their assets to go to neighboring countries should not have to pay a new price. Therefore, we are ready to provide every kind of support we can to those who want to return and rebuild their country.
For those who wish to return voluntarily, we can provide strong training in many fields, from municipal services to craftsmanship, at our IMM art and vocational courses, ISMEK. We can prepare an action plan for post-conflict cities with our sister city, Damascus."
