Lieutenants at Tuzla Infantry School dismissed: Retired Major General Ahmet Yavuz reacts to the decision
All lieutenants involved in the 'Atatürk badge' altercation at the Tuzla Infantry School have been dismissed from the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). Retired Major General Ahmet Yavuz stated, "The dismissal of a group of lieutenants from the TSK for fighting with officers who are members of a religious sect is unacceptable."
The investigation launched following an altercation at the Tuzla Infantry School on November 10, which occurred after a lieutenant did not pin an Atatürk photograph to his lapel, has concluded. According to the report by Ersin Eroğlu from 10Haber, all 7 lieutenants involved in the altercation have been dismissed from the TSK.
AHMET YAVUZ: DISMISSAL IS UNACCEPTABLE
Retired Major General Ahmet Yavuz reacted to the decision regarding the dismissal of the lieutenants. In a post on his social media account, Yavuz stated: "The dismissal of a group of lieutenants from the TSK for fighting with officers who are members of a religious sect is unacceptable. This is not a decision that can be explained solely by the establishment of discipline. It is similar to what was done to the admiral wearing a turban and the retired admirals who expressed their views on the Montreux Convention," he said.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In a report featured on its front page on December 14, Yeni Şafak used the headline 'lieutenant junta' and claimed that religious student officers were being profiled at the Tuzla Infantry School.
The report alleged that a group of lieutenants had formed a structure among themselves and had pressured and beaten religious lieutenants. It was stated that the events erupted during the November 10 ceremony.
It was alleged that some lieutenants did not pin Atatürk photographs to their lapels at the ceremony, claiming there were not enough safety pins, and that the lieutenants alleged to have formed a group engaged in swearing, with subsequent incidents of barracks raids and physical assault. According to the report, the events were taken to the judiciary upon the complaints of the assaulted officers, and a legal process began.
