In the case of Cemal Metin Avcı, the perpetrator who brutally murdered university student Pınar Gültekin in Muğla in 2020, the Court of Cassation overturned the aggravated life sentence, stating that “burning someone alive is not a monstrous act.”
The Önce Çocuklar ve Kadınlar Derneği (Association of Children and Women First) reacted to the decision.
In a statement made via the association's social media account, they said, "We do not accept this. We will continue to expose the perpetrator, those who protect him, and the judicial mechanism that is complicit in this crime".
The following statements were included in the post shared on their X account:
"While impunity has already become the rule, we are once again seeing how the judiciary intervenes when the perpetrator has powerful connections.
Despite the Forensic Medicine report proving that Pınar Gültekin was burned alive, the Court of Cassation decided that the murderer did not act with 'monstrous intent' and requested the application of an unjust provocation reduction. Yet the laws are clear: Killing by burning falls directly under the scope of 'murder with monstrous intent' and requires an aggravated life sentence. Justice does not operate when it comes to women, but according to the status of the perpetrators.
We do not accept this. We will continue to expose the perpetrator, those who protect him, and the judicial mechanism that is complicit in this crime. #PınarGültekin We will follow the process until justice is served."
