Opposition MPs in Albanian Parliament block podium with chairs and set off smoke bombs
In the Albanian Parliament, opposition lawmakers disrupted a session where several legislative amendments were scheduled to be discussed. The MPs placed chairs in front of the podium and set off smoke bombs.
Lawmakers from opposition parties, primarily from the main opposition Democratic Party of Albania (PD), blocked the proceedings in parliament.
Speaker of the Albanian Parliament Lindita Nikolla, in her opening remarks at the session, described the events as a "shame for the Albanian parliament".
"PROTESTS WILL CONTINUE"
Despite the tension in the assembly, the MPs approved several draft laws, after which Speaker Nikolla adjourned the session.
Opposition MPs had previously disrupted the start of sessions by occupying the area reserved for ministers and parliamentary officials.
Stating that the protests would continue, the lawmakers argued that the parliament is not an institution of the government.
