Parliament convenes in extraordinary session, Can Atalay ruling not read: Deputies clash

The Constitutional Court (AYM) had stated in its reasoned decision that the revocation of Can Atalay's parliamentary membership was 'null and void.' This decision was not read during today's extraordinary General Assembly session. Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş adjourned the session to reconvene on Tuesday, October 1, at 15:00.

Opposition parties, including CHP, DEM Party, Saadet Party, TİP, DEVA, Democrat Party, and the Labor Party, had applied to the Parliament Speaker's Office on August 9 for the Assembly to convene regarding the Constitutional Court's (AYM) ruling on Can Atalay. Upon the call of Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) General Assembly convened in an extraordinary session today.

During the extraordinary session, the preliminary discussions for the CHP's motion on 'holding a general debate regarding the Constitutional Court's decision on the process of revoking Can Atalay's parliamentary membership' were completed.

GENERAL DEBATE AND 'PARLIAMENT SHOULD CONTINUE ITS WORK' MOTIONS REJECTED

Following speeches by political party groups and the primary signatories of the motion, the question of whether to open a general debate was put to a vote by the General Assembly. As a result of the electronic voting, the motion was rejected.

After the agenda for the extraordinary meeting was completed, the CHP's motion for the TBMM to continue its work was put to a vote. This motion was also rejected.

Following the rejection of the motions, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş adjourned the session to reconvene on Tuesday, October 1, at 15:00.

CAN ATALAY RULING NOT READ

The Constitutional Court's reasoned decision stating that the revocation of Can Atalay's parliamentary membership was 'null and void' was not read in the TBMM.
