It has been learned that a release decision has been issued for the members of the Turkey Youth Union (TGB) who were arrested for putting a sack over the head of a US soldier serving on the USS WASP, a US ship docked in İzmir.

ARREST DECISION HAD BEEN ISSUED

In İzmir, 10 out of 15 members of the Turkey Youth Union (TGB) who were detained in connection with the incident of putting a sack over the head of a US soldier were arrested by the court they were brought before on September 3.

The proceedings at the courthouse for the 15 suspects, who were detained by the teams of the Provincial Security Directorate's Security Branch, were completed, and the court had ruled for the arrest of 10 of the suspects, while 5 were released under judicial control.

THEY PUT A SACK OVER THE HEAD OF A US SOLDIER

The US amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD-1) docked at the Port of İzmir. An American soldier serving on the US warship disembarked from the ship to spend time in the city.

On Kıbrıs Şehitleri Street in Alsancak, a large group, including members of the Turkey Youth Union, put a sack over the head of the US soldier. The 15 people identified as having put the sack over his head were detained.

GOVERNOR'S OFFICE ISSUED A STATEMENT

In a written statement made by the İzmir Governor's Office, it was stated that a group of 15 people, consisting of 2 women and 13 men who are members of the TGB, physically attacked 2 US military personnel on Kıbrıs Şehitleri Street around 16:00. The statement included the following expressions:

“Our security forces intervened rapidly in the incident, which 5 US soldiers in civilian clothes also joined after seeing it from a distance. The 15 suspects who carried out the incident were apprehended and taken into custody upon the instruction of the duty public prosecutor. A judicial investigation has been initiated regarding the matter.”

US EMBASSY EXPRESSED THANKS

The US Embassy in Ankara thanked the Turkish authorities for their rapid intervention in the attack on American military personnel in İzmir and for initiating an investigation into the incident.

In a post made on the Embassy's X social media account, it was stated, "We confirm that US military personnel serving on the USS Wasp were subjected to an attack in İzmir today and are currently safe. We thank the Turkish authorities for their rapid response to the incident and for launching an investigation."
