CHP Chairman Özgür Özel has also joined the 'Sheikh Said' polemic, which is at the top of the political agenda.
Participating in a TV program, Özel said, "I will not call Sheikh Said a traitor, nor will I call him a hero just to please you... I know that the Sheikh Said rebellion was an uprising against the Republic in its own context. If the pain caused during the suppression of this uprising hurts the hearts of some grandchildren today, one must be respectful of that pain.
However, one must learn lessons from history. It is not anyone's place to attribute certain discomforts or sorrows that occurred in places where the Republic's founding cadres lacked today's communication capabilities and where it was impossible to track orders, to Atatürk, or to burden the CHP with them as if they were a weight." he stated.
These remarks by Özgür Özel became a topic of public debate.
Retired Major General Ahmet Yavuzexpressed that these words from Özgür Özel were disappointing.
'WITH HIS TOLERANCE REGARDING SHEIKH SAID...'
Yavuz, "Mr. Özgür Özel, with his tolerance regarding Sheikh Said, and Mr. Ümit Özdağ, with his adoption of Nihal Atsız, have missed the line of the Atatürk republic. This is submitted for their attention." he said.
