Salary protest at Akkuyu: Gendarmerie intervenes against workers with water cannons!

Hundreds of workers employed at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, which is under construction in the Gülnar district of Mersin, have taken to the streets once again due to salaries that have remained unpaid for months. The workers, who went on strike last week and received no response to their demands, continued their protests today.

GENDARMERIE INTERVENED, WATER CANNONS USED

The peaceful protest carried out by the workers was met with attempts by the gendarmerie to block it. Teams dispatched to the scene intervened harshly against the workers. A Riot Control Vehicle (TOMA) was also used during the intervention. The moments of the intervention were recorded by mobile phone cameras.

"NO PAYMENTS FOR MONTHS, WE CANNOT FIND ANYONE TO TALK TO"

Speaking during the protest, workers expressed their reactions by stating that they had not received their salaries for months. One worker, speaking to the Cumhuriyet newspaper, said, "We haven't received our salaries for months. People leave their children and spouses to come here. We are in a miserable state." According to the workers, the source of the problems is the subcontractor, TSM Enerji İnşaat Sanayi Limited Şirketi, which bears the primary responsibility for payment.

SUBCONTRACTOR EVADES RESPONSIBILITY

The workers state that the subcontractor firm is not making payments and that they cannot receive clear information from any official. Describing their desperation, the workers said, "There is no one to talk to. When we raise our voices to seek our rights, we are met with the gendarmerie."
