Sharp reaction to 'PKK opening' commission: 'An invitation to take revenge on the Republic'
The 11th meeting of the "PKK Opening Commission," led by Devlet Bahçeli, saw heated debates. While members from the DEM Party walked out of the meeting, Hüseyin Özbek made significant assessments regarding the origins of contemporary ethnic separatist movements by referencing the Armistice period.
The 11th meeting of the "PKK Opening Commission," initiated under the leadership of Devlet Bahçeli and supported at the highest level by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was the scene of heated debates. While members from the DEM Party walked out of the meeting following the tension, the statements made by some individuals on the commission drew significant backlash.
The speech by Mehmet Beşir Şimşek, Deputy Chairman of the Union of Scholars and Madrasas (İttihadul-Ulema), became the focus of criticism, particularly due to his stance, which is seen as close to Hezbollah.
Following these debates, author and lawyer Hüseyin Özbek, in a statement to 12punto, drew parallels with current developments by recalling the "Society for the Rise of Islam" and the "Society for the Rise of Kurdistan," which were established with British support during the Armistice period.
Özbek used the following expressions:
“The Society for the Rise of Islam and the Society for the Rise of Kurdistan, which were introduced during the Armistice period, were anti-National Struggle, British-programmed, and British-financed; they are the spiritual roots of today's ethnic separatist structures.
The invitation to the commission of this ethno-feudal, religion-referenced separatism—which could not achieve its goals even during the Armistice period, could not prevent the liberation, and could not block the path of the Republic—is a conscious invitation aimed at taking revenge on the Republic. It is a great pity.”
