Statement on Syria from Özgür Özel: We share the concerns of our Alevi citizens regarding their relatives

As violence against Alawites in Latakia and its surrounding areas continues, reactions to the atrocities are emerging one after another.

Most recently, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made a statement on his social media account and expressed his reaction.

In his post, Özel included the following remarks:

"We are following the events that have taken place in Syria in recent days closely and with sadness. It is evident that the false sense of spring created by the government around the rhetoric of victory in Syria has dissipated and that conflicts have flared up once again.

The increase in civilian casualties as a result of the violence directed at Alawites in Latakia and its surroundings, and the fear of massacres against minorities, are creating great anxiety among all our citizens.

Since the Syrian Civil War began in 2011, Turkey has been the country most affected after Syria itself. I remind everyone of the necessity for our country to stand in solidarity with the entire brotherly Syrian people to prevent the deepening of the conflicts.

We share the concerns felt by our Alevi citizens in the geography close to Syria regarding the situation of their relatives, and we are continuing our contacts with the authorities on this matter.

We invite the Government of the Republic of Turkey to act more effectively on this issue and to take result-oriented initiatives before the Damascus administration to prevent civilian casualties."
