The elections lasted 37 rounds: First statement from Ömer Kerkez, elected as President of the Court of Cassation!

The deadlock in the Court of Cassation presidency elections has been resolved.

Ömer Kerkez, who received 193 votes in the elections that lasted 37 rounds and from which candidate Muhsin Şentürk withdrew, was elected as the new president of the Court of Cassation.

The previous president, Mehmet Akarca, received 103 votes.

A certificate presentation and robe-wearing ceremony were held for Kerkez at the Court of Cassation Conference Hall. Kerkez's certificate was presented by Adem Albayrak, 1st Deputy President of the Court of Cassation and President of the General Assembly of Law, and his presidential robe was put on by the previous President, Mehmet Akarca.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kerkez thanked the members who deemed him worthy of the presidency and stated that a challenging election process had been left behind.

Stating that the elections have ended as of today, Kerkez said, "Today, together with you, we will look at what needs to be done for our judiciary and for our Court of Cassation. We have neither the time nor the energy to deal with anything else."

Promising to do his best to protect the reputation of the Court of Cassation, Kerkez noted that judicial bodies and the Court of Cassation have recently become a constant subject of discussion and debate.

Kerkez said, "We must resolve the problems stemming from us, at the very least, regarding these negative discussions as soon as possible. We are already serving the judiciary with great sacrifices. We must continue this to the end without hesitation."

Noting that his office will be open to everyone throughout his tenure and that he will not discriminate against anyone, Kerkez thanked former President Akarca for his services during his term.

Kerkez stated, "The Turkish judiciary will rise on the backs of true judges and prosecutors who have engraved the idea of respect for human rights and fundamental rights and freedoms into their minds, the power of independence into their decisions, and the sense of impartiality and justice into their hearts."

AKARCA: I HOLD NO GRUDGE AGAINST ANYONE

Speaking at the ceremony, Akarca also stated that he thanked everyone who voted and did not vote for him during the past election process.

Saying, "What matters is the exaltation of the judiciary and the Court of Cassation, and the protection of the prestige of these institutions," Akarca noted that he believes Kerkez will put forth all his efforts.

Expressing that he holds no grudge against anyone due to the election results, Akarca said, "The favor and discretion of the Supreme General Assembly are above all else. Of course, democratic traditions are established in this way and continue their existence in this way."
