The October 2023 results of the "Hunger and Poverty Threshold Study," conducted every month by TÜRK-İŞ to reveal the living conditions of workers and determine the reflections of price changes in basic necessities on the family budget, have been announced.

According to the study, the "hunger threshold," which represents the amount of food expenditure a family of 4 must make to eat in a healthy, balanced, and sufficient manner, was 13 thousand 648 liras in October.

The "poverty threshold," which corresponds to the total amount of mandatory expenditures for food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, health, and similar needs, was calculated as 44 thousand 573 liras.

While the "cost of living" for a single worker was determined to be 17 thousand 803 liras per month, the minimum amount that a family of four living in Ankara must spend on food increased by 2.62 percent compared to the previous month.

PASTA PRICES INCREASED BY 12 PERCENT

According to the study, while milk and cheese prices maintained their levels from last month, yogurt prices increased by 11 percent.

No significant increase was observed in meat prices. Anchovies, which were sold for 100 liras at market stalls last month, were sold for 95 liras this month with a partial decrease. The most popular sea fish at the stalls continued to be sold at an average of 178 liras this month.

In legumes, the highest increase was seen in dried beans. The price of dried beans showed an average increase of 24 percent compared to last month. Chickpea prices increased by 10 percent, green lentils by 15 percent, and red lentils by 6 percent.

While pasta prices increased by 12 percent, the prices of rice, bulgur, flour, and semolina rose at a limited level compared to last month.

''QUINCE IS 40 LIRAS''

The average vegetable price per kilogram was calculated at 26 liras, and the average fruit price per kilogram at 30 liras. While quince took its place on the stalls with an average price of 40 liras, the lowest-priced fruit this month was mandarin at 20 liras.

There was a limited increase in oil prices compared to last month. Olive oil and butter prices increased by 5 percent in October. A 4 percent increase was observed in sunflower oil prices.
