Poverty line announced, but... Millions are living below the hunger threshold

According to a report in BirGün, Kamu-Ar, the R&D unit of Birleşik Kamu-İş, has released its Hunger and Poverty Research for October. 

While the hunger threshold for a family of four rose by 878 TL in October to reach 15,420 TL, the poverty line has also neared 44,000 TL. 

FOOD IS THE LARGEST EXPENDITURE ITEM

The hunger threshold increased by 878 TL compared to the previous month in October to reach 15,420 TL, while the poverty line rose by a total of 19,346 TL over the last year to 43,859 TL.  

According to the research, a large portion of a family's income goes toward food expenses. Based on prices compiled from the most frequently visited markets in Ankara, for a family of four to maintain a balanced diet, they must spend 4,254 TL on meat, fish, and eggs; 3,518 TL on milk, yogurt, and cheese; 2,099 TL on vegetables; 1,334 TL on fruit; and 333 TL on dried legumes. In October, clothing and footwear expenditures for four people rose to 1,413 TL, housing (including rent) expenses increased to 5,500 TL, household goods expenditures were 3,764 TL, and health expenditures were 1,209 TL.
