A breakfast staple gets more expensive: Egg prices skyrocket

The egg market has seen a notable price increase since the second half of July. According to current market data from Afyonkarahisar and Kayseri, which are among Turkey's key production centers, producer prices have recorded an increase of up to 61 percent in approximately four weeks.

According to a report by Ekonomim, the price per double-yolk egg in the Başmakçı district of Afyonkarahisar, which was sold for 2.80 TL on July 13, has risen to 4.50 TL following a recent 40-kuruş increase. In the district, the price of large-size eggs reached 4.40 TL, medium-large eggs 4.30 TL, pullet eggs 4.10 TL, small eggs 3.30 TL, and starter eggs 2.90 TL.

A similar trend was observed in Kayseri. With a recent 30-kuruş hike, the price per double-yolk egg reached 4.35 TL. In the city, large-size eggs are trading at 4.20 TL, medium-large eggs at 4.10 TL, and pullet eggs at 3.60 TL, while it was noted that prices for small and starter categories remained stable.

The rise in input costs such as feed, energy, labor, and logistics is considered to be the driving factor behind the price increases. Egg prices, which followed a volatile course throughout the year, had dropped to 2.80 TL in June and early July after reaching 4.10 TL in May.

It is observed that the increases on the producer side are gradually being reflected on retail shelves. In chain supermarkets, the price of a 30-count carton of medium-sized eggs ranges between 170 TL and 210 TL. Factors such as weight class, organic production, or free-range labeling can push shelf prices even higher.
