Breaking News: Date set for Minimum Wage Determination Commission meeting

The Minimum Wage Determination Commission, consisting of representatives from workers, employers, and the government, will hold its first meeting on December 10 as part of the process to determine the minimum wage to be applied in 2025.

The minimum wage must be determined and shared with the public by December 31.

FOUR WORKERS WILL BE AT THE TABLE

The 5-member Türk-İş delegation representing the workers' side in the commission will be chaired by Deputy Chairman Ramazan Ağar. As in previous years, 4 workers will be included in the delegation this year.

Workers will be represented at the table by cook Selma Sayın, hairdresser Nihan Koçak, subcontractor worker Durmuş Öztürk, and media member Sezer Özseven.

"UNACCEPTABLE" STATEMENT FROM WORKERS

Türk-İş Chairman Atalay stated that it is impossible to accept the figures currently circulating, which have been voiced by some circles.

Atalay said that these are not figures that will make society happy.

HOW IS THE MINIMUM WAGE DETERMINED?

By law, the minimum wage is determined by the Minimum Wage Determination Commission, which consists of 15 people, with five representatives each from workers, employers, and the government.

The commission is called to a meeting by the Minister of Labor and Social Security and, by tradition, meets four times in December as part of the efforts to determine the new minimum wage.

The commission, chaired by one of the members appointed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, meets with the participation of at least 10 members and makes decisions by majority vote.

In the event of a tie, the side on which the commission chair is located is considered to have the majority.

FIGURES ON THE TABLE FOR MINIMUM WAGE

While different scenarios regarding minimum wage hike estimates are being discussed, the rate at which negotiations for the new minimum wage will begin is also becoming clearer. Based on public expectations, negotiations are expected to start with a demand for a minimum increase of 25-35 percent. According to the potential scenarios regarding the minimum wage, the wages will take shape as follows:

“If a 20 percent raise is applied, the minimum wage will be 20 thousand 402 liras.

If a 25 percent raise is applied, the minimum wage will be 21 thousand 252 liras.

If a 30 percent raise is applied, the minimum wage will be 22 thousand 102 liras.

If a 35 percent raise is applied, the minimum wage will be 22 thousand 502 liras.

If a 40 percent raise is applied, the minimum wage will be 23 thousand 802 liras.”
