In Europe, 44 industrial associations representing strategic sectors such as metal, chemicals, and automotive parts have called on European Union countries to take urgent measures against China's trade practices. The associations stated that current conditions are putting pressure on European manufacturing and could increase job losses.
The call comes at a time when the EU is attempting to reduce its daily trade deficit in goods with China, which exceeds 1 billion euros. Ahead of meetings to be held by European leaders in Brussels, industry representatives requested that trade defense instruments be used more effectively and that new mechanisms be developed against market distortions caused by state interventions.
The industrial associations also argued that the European Commission's capacity in this area needs to be strengthened. Among the demands was an increase in the number of personnel within the Commission dealing with trade defense processes.
It is noted that rechargeable hybrid cars, as well as plastic and composite materials, are particularly prominent in the discussions. While the issue of China limiting its exports was addressed during EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic's contacts in Beijing, it is stated that quotas and additional customs duties could be on the agenda if no results are achieved.
It was also reported that French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have proposed giving the European Commission broader powers to restrict access to the common market for products deemed to distort competition.
