Fatih Karahan appointed as the new Central Bank Governor. Who is Fatih Karahan?

The life and career of Dr. Fatih Karahan, who was appointed as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye on July 28, 2023, are being closely followed.

Having completed his undergraduate studies in Industrial Engineering and Mathematics at Boğaziçi University, Fatih Karahan served within the Federal Reserve Bank of New York between 2012 and 2022.

Following the request of Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (TCMB) Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan to be relieved of her duties, research into Fatih Karahan's life and career has intensified.

Karahan, who completed his undergraduate education at Boğaziçi University, served as an economic research advisor in the Labor and Product Market Studies division of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Monetary Policy Research Department between 2012 and 2022.

WHO IS FATİH KARAHAN?

Born in Eskişehir in 1982, Fatih Karahan graduated from Boğaziçi University's Mathematics and Industrial Engineering departments in 2006.

He completed his master's and doctoral degrees in Economics at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. Starting his professional career as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 2012, Karahan served as the Head of Labor and Product Market Studies and as a monetary policy advisor at the aforementioned institution until 2022.

Having also served as a part-time lecturer at Columbia University and New York University, Karahan began working as a senior economist at Amazon in 2022. Karahan was appointed as Chief Economist at Amazon in November 2022.

Karahan was appointed as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye on July 28, 2023.
