First three-month rate for January retiree pension hikes announced

The first three-month data for the raise that millions of SSK, Bağ-Kur, and civil servant retirees will receive in January 2027 has been clarified. With the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) announcing September inflation, the cumulative rate for the July-September period, representing the second half of the year, reached 5.56 percent.

According to TÜİK data, inflation in September was 1.84 percent monthly and 29.73 percent annually. Following monthly inflation rates of 1.78 percent in July and 1.84 percent in August, the addition of the September data completes the first quarter of the pension hike calculation.

The January 2027 raise for SSK and Bağ-Kur retirees will be determined based on the total inflation that occurs in the second half of 2026. Therefore, the 5.56 percent rate represents the first finalized portion; inflation data for October, November, and December will be awaited for the final raise.

FINAL RATE TO BE CLARIFIED WITH DECEMBER DATA

Market expectations and year-end inflation forecasts suggest that the increase to be implemented in January 2027 could be higher than current data indicates. However, the exact rate to be reflected in pension payments will be calculated after the December inflation figures are released.

If the Central Bank's year-end inflation forecast of 28 percent is realized, inflation for the second half of 2026 is estimated to be approximately 8.70 percent. According to the 29.43 percent expectation in the Survey of Market Participants, it is stated that this rate could rise to the 9.97 percent level.

For civil servants and civil servant retirees, the calculation will be based on the collective bargaining agreement raise and the inflation difference. The collective bargaining raise for the first half of 2027 has been set at 5 percent, and 4 percent for the second half. The inflation difference will also become clear once the six-month data is complete.

For the lowest pension payment, inflation data alone will not be the sole determinant. A legal regulation is required to increase the base pension. In a potential regulation, it is estimated that the lowest pension could exceed the 25 thousand TL threshold based on different inflation scenarios; the exact amount will depend on the regulation to be made in Parliament.
