140 percent hike in electricity! Effective from February 1st

While the rise in the dollar exchange rate and high inflation have led to negative returns for the Turkish Lira, the green light has been given for new price hikes.

Most recently, CHP Zonguldak Deputy Deniz Yavuzyılmaz announced that there will be a 140 percent hike in electricity.

'EFFECTIVE FROM FEBRUARY 1, 2025'

In a post on his social media account titled "If anyone can do it, the AK Party can," Yavuzyılmaz included the following statements:

"The AK Party, which crushes citizens with inflation by only increasing the minimum wage by 30 percent, has paved the way for a 140 percent hike in electricity. So how? First, with a decision taken, the vast majority of residential subscribers were classified as free consumers.

Then, residential subscribers with a monthly bill of 1,050 TL and above were removed from the fixed-price tariff and included in the variable-price tariff, where the Market Clearing Price (PTF) applies.

Thus, these subscribers were left at the mercy of private companies, which produce 83 percent of the country's electricity due to privatizations and are the main determinants of the Market Clearing Price.

For this reason, starting from February 1, 2025; a 97 percent hike is coming to bills over 1,050 TL. A 1,050 TL bill is rising to 2,066 TL! It is not over... We calculate that in the coming period, the AK Party will include a portion of the remaining subscribers in the variable-price tariff at the first opportunity.

We anticipate that residential subscribers with a monthly electricity bill of 495 TL and above will also be removed from their current tariffs and included in the tariff where the PTF applies. This means that a 495 TL bill will rise to 1,190 TL, which is a 140 percent hike."
