KESK reacts to minimum wage, calls it 'below the hunger threshold'

Following the announcement of the minimum wage amount, reactions to the 17,002 lira figure have begun to emerge one after another.

After it was announced that the minimum wage would be determined only once during the year, and following the realization that it remained below the 18,000 lira hunger threshold, a press statement was issued by the KESK executive board.

The statement included the following remarks:

The decision of 17,002 TL reached by the Minimum Wage Determination Commission remains even below the hunger threshold of 18,000 TL; with this decision, the government and capital circles are condemning millions to live in conditions of misery.

While capital owners grow wealthy through the value added by workers and laborers and the taxes they pay, labor's share of the national income has continuously declined throughout the AKP government, and the public has been abandoned to poverty.

It should not be forgotten that in this country, the minimum wage has become the average wage. With this decision, under current inflation conditions, even if 3 people in a family of four were to work, they would only be able to have an income above the poverty line.

As KESK, we share with the public that we will continue our struggle for a wage worthy of human dignity and above the poverty line, as we demanded in the 7 rallies we held over the last year with the slogan "We want a living budget! We want a democratic budget that favors the people and labor!", and we call on all confederations to defend the rights of labor together!
