In South America, the previously unpublished book 'En Agosto Nos Vemos' (Until August) by Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, one of the most important representatives of the magical realism movement, was published in Spanish this week.

Speaking to the BBC, Garcia Marquez's son Gonzalo said that before his father's death, he was "not in a state to make sound decisions about his works, only seeing the flaws and ignoring the interesting things."

'IT WAS A BETRAYAL BUT...'

Stating that he recently reread the text, Gonzalo expressed that it was "not as bad as Gabo thought," and that it was a valuable contribution to his work because it showed a new side of him and was "unique."

"We were definitely not going to destroy it. We took a draft in 2022 and read it, and there wasn't really much debate about it," said Gonzalo, continuing as follows:

"We realized that the book was complete; we didn't need to do much editing. No additions or major changes were made. We thought for about three seconds about whether this was a betrayal of my family and my father's wishes, and we decided: yes, it was a betrayal, but that's what children are for."

En Agosto Nos Vemos (Until August) tells the story of Ana Magdalena, a middle-aged married woman, and the erotic affair she has with a man she meets at a hotel on a Caribbean island where she went to visit her mother's grave, as well as the character's search shaped around this experience.
