How to prepare our skin for winter? A guide to preparing your skin for the winter season
While changing weather and harsh cold already bring many illnesses, experts point out that the expected colder and windier days can also become a major problem for our skin. Here are some tips for preparing your skin for winter...
It is known that flare-ups of dermatological conditions such as eczema, atopic dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis increase during the winter period due to skin dryness.
There are various ways to strengthen the skin barrier and ensure that the skin is exposed to less damage.
HOW DO WE PREPARE OUR SKIN FOR WINTER?
- Avoid taking long, hot showers.
- Especially if you have dry skin, choose shower gels that do not dry out your skin and are free of perfume, SLS, and parabens.
- After every shower, while your skin is still slightly damp, do not forget to use a moisturizer to lock the water into your skin.
- Remember that you may need to change the skincare products you use for your face according to the seasons. For example, if the cleanser you use is drying out your skin too much during this period, switch to a less drying cleanser; if you experience dryness, make your facial moisturizer more intensive or increase the frequency of application.
- Since dryness and eczema can also be seen on the hands due to the effects of winter, avoid washing your hands with very hot water and try to use as little cologne and disinfectant as possible. Using fragrance-free moisturizers containing ingredients like glycerin or ceramides after every hand wash will contribute to the skin barrier. Apply petroleum jelly to your hands two nights a week and wear cotton eczema gloves until morning; this will make your hands more resistant to winter conditions.
- Moisturize your lips with moisturizing lip balms that do not contain perfume or colorants. When choosing these products, opting for those that contain a sun protection factor will also allow you to protect your lips from the sun. If you have a habit of licking your lips due to dryness, give it up, as it will only make the situation worse.
- Since more time is spent in closed environments such as homes and workplaces during the winter season, skin dryness can increase due to the effect of the hot and dry air in these environments. For this reason, take care to use air humidifiers in the indoor spaces where you spend a lot of time.
- Do not forget that you should continue to use your sunscreen for your skin health during the winter period as well.
