Mucilage nightmare returns to the Marmara: It has appeared at two points

Mucilage has been encountered on the Tekirdağ and Kocaeli coasts of the Sea of Marmara.

A research group consisting of faculty members from the Istanbul University Faculty of Aquatic Sciences has launched a study to determine the status of living organisms on the seabed of the Sea of Marmara and to collect samples by observing the desertification on the seafloor.

The research group, which set out on an inspection voyage with the faculty's research vessel 'R/V YUNUS-S', lowered a camera to the sea surface to make observations.

During the study conducted off the coast of the Marmaraereğlisi district of Tekirdağ, the faculty members, who encountered a similar image on the seabed at a depth of 22 meters with an underwater camera, were surprised to encounter the image they expected to see at a depth of approximately 300 meters. The group members, who collected various samples by attempting to lower the camera even deeper, determined that the layer they encountered at a depth of 22 meters was a mucilage layer approximately 10 meters thick.

In studies conducted by another group of scientists last week in the Gulf of İzmit, in the Eskihisar region of the Gebze district, mucilage was also detected clustered at depths of 10-15 meters in the sea. The images reflected on the diver's camera showed that the danger of mucilage persists.
