Çukurca tahini was registered as a geographical indication in the Geographical Indication and Traditional Product Name Bulletin No. 167, published by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office on February 15, 2024.

Çukurca tahini receives geographical indication

Çukurca tahini has become the first product registered under the name of Hakkâri in 2024.

Thus, in addition to Doleme, Doğaba, and Kıris, which were registered in 2017, and Yüksekova Çirek cheese, which was registered in 2022, along with Kade, Kepaye, Girara Huluga, Gulol, Hakkari rug, and Gayle Zengil registered in 2023, the total number of registered products belonging to Hakkari has reached 11 with the addition of Çukurca tahini in 2024.

'IT HAS AN IMPORTANT PLACE IN CULINARY CULTURE'

In a statement made by the East Anatolia Development Agency (DAKA), it was noted that Çukurca tahini is a tahini produced using sesame seeds grown in Çukurca and ground in stone mills, stating, "The sesame seeds are roasted over an oak wood fire and ground in a water-powered stone mill. For this reason, no sediment or oil layer forms on the top. Because the roasting time of the sesame is long, Çukurca tahini is in shades of brown to dark brown. It has a fluid consistency.

Çukurca tahini has a long history in the Çukurca district. It has an important place in the culinary culture of the geographical region. Its production, especially in terms of growing the sesame seeds and preparing them for tahini production, carries characteristics specific to the geographical region and requires craftsmanship. For these reasons, it has a reputation link with the geographical region," the statement said.
