Expert warning on high-protein products: Don't assume they are healthy without checking the label
Dietitian Gizem Güneş stated that high-protein packaged products are not always healthy, issuing a warning regarding their sugar and carbohydrate content.
High-protein packaged products, which frequently appear on supermarket shelves and social media, can be perceived as a healthy option due to the "protein" label. Dietitian Gizem Güneş, however, warned consumers to check the ingredient labels, stating that these products do not automatically equate to healthy nutrition.
Reminding that protein-enriched yogurt, milk, quark, cheese, and similar products are often preferred, especially during weight loss processes, Güneş emphasized that the fundamental criterion for healthy nutrition is balance. "Saying it has increased protein does not mean it is healthy nutrition," Güneş said.
According to Güneş, focusing solely on the number on the scale during the weight loss process is not correct. Stating that the main goal should be to prevent muscle loss, lose as much fat as possible, and progress without harming the body, Güneş said that protein intake can be helpful in this process, but the sugar and carbohydrate amounts of the products must be checked.
Pointing out that excessive protein consumption can increase the burden on the kidneys, Güneş recommended that daily protein needs should primarily be met from natural foods such as eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt, chicken, and fish. She stated that packaged high-protein products can be considered as a supplement in cases where natural sources are not available.
Stating that social media trends rapidly influence nutritional choices, Güneş said that focusing only on appearance and weight should not overshadow general health. Güneş pointed out the importance of individuals creating a nutritional regimen by considering their own body's needs and seeking expert support when necessary.
