Groundbreaking vaccine trial begins for bowel cancer treatment

Health experts have begun testing a vaccine that could be used to treat bowel cancer. This potentially 'groundbreaking' vaccine, which will be administered at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, is believed to be effective in treating early-stage bowel cancer. The goal of the vaccine is to encourage the body to attack cancer cells, allowing it to be administered to patients before surgery to provide a less invasive treatment.
This treatment method has the potential to prevent cancer recurrence and support the immune system should it return. Dr. Tony Dhillon, the lead researcher of the study in Surrey, stated that this is the first therapeutic vaccine developed for gastrointestinal cancers and expressed his belief that if the treatment is successful, it could lead to the complete elimination of cancer in many patients.
The trial will be conducted by the UK Southampton Cancer Clinical Research Unit at the University of Southampton and will involve 44 patients, including those in Australia. Once this small-scale trial is completed, the vaccine is expected to be licensed to increase its use and to conduct a larger-scale study if it proves successful.
