What is carotid artery stenosis, which caused the death of Metin Uca, and how can we protect ourselves?

TV programmer and author Metin Uca passed away at the age of 62 due to carotid artery stenosis.

Following Uca's sudden death, social media users are researching exactly what carotid artery stenosis is.

'IF THESE VESSELS BECOME BLOCKED...'

Providing information about carotid artery stenosis, Radiology Specialist Güner Sönmez stated, "There are two vessels on both sides of the neck known as the carotid arteries, or 'şah damarı' in Turkish. The carotid arteries carry blood from the heart to the brain and face. If the inside of these vessels becomes blocked due to fat deposits, carotid artery disease occurs, and the risk of stroke increases. During a stroke, brain cells begin to die within minutes because they cannot receive oxygen.

Depending on the size and function of the brain region that is not receiving blood, a severe condition can develop, ranging from paralysis and speech impairment to death. We call the deposit consisting of cholesterol, blood cells, and fat that blocks the vessel a plaque. This process is called atherosclerosis."

HOW CAN WE PROTECT OURSELVES FROM CAROTID ARTERY STENOSIS?

-Do not smoke.

-Maintain an ideal weight.

-Exercise regularly.

-Eat healthily.

-Reduce alcohol consumption.

-If we are in a risk group, we must have regular check-ups.
