If there are 2 foreign registrations at the Minister's residence, how many are there in Turkey?

T24 columnist Tolga Şardan wrote yesterday that two foreign nationals were registered as residents at the home of Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. This scandal, reported by Şardan, has now entered the political agenda.

According to Şardan's account, a very interesting incident occurred last May during address verification procedures carried out in Çankaya, one of Ankara's most important districts. A neighborhood watchman (bekçi) assigned to the Çankaya region came to an address near Atakule while conducting inspections according to his list. The watchman, who arrived at the private property where police were providing perimeter security, asked the guards whether the two people named on his list lived at that address. The security police, suspicious of the watchman who arrived with a list, first detained him and then informed the police station responsible for the address. The address where the two foreigners on the watchman's list, who held temporary residence permits, were said to live was the residence of Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

Stating that "events that began like a joke suddenly turned into a crisis. How could they not?" Şardan added, "Residence permits for two foreigners had been issued at the home of the Interior Minister, the very person at the top of the ministry fighting illegal migration."

CALLED ON THE MIGRATION MANAGEMENT

The first reaction to the scandal came from the İYİ Party. İYİ Party Ankara Deputy and member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Foreign Affairs Committee, Prof. Dr. Kürşad Zorlu, submitted a parliamentary question for Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya to answer, following Şardan's article titled "Two residence permits issued in the names of two foreigners found at Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya's residence."

In a statement on social media, Zorlu emphasized that it is a complete scandal for foreigners to appear registered at the home of a government minister even if they do not live there, and asked, "Even if the address owners are unaware of this, why and how does such a registration system emerge?"

"Of course, this situation also brings to mind the 'Phantom Voter' allegation," said Zorlu, pointing to what happened regarding these allegations during the election period: "I had followed up on this issue and submitted a parliamentary question. The answer came from the Supreme Election Council: All objections regarding phantom voters in Denizli, Ağrı, Şırnak, Batman, Şanlıurfa, Kars, Bitlis, Hakkari, Elazığ, and Mardin were rejected for various reasons... Now the Presidency of Migration Management must make a statement regarding the 'Unregistered Foreigners' issue!"

SHARED THE QUESTIONS HE ASKED THE MINISTER

Announcing that he had submitted a parliamentary question requesting Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya to answer regarding the scandal, İYİ Party's Zorlu also shared the questions he asked the minister with the public:

"What is the distribution of foreigners living in our country who have received residence permits according to the provinces they live in?

Is an inspection study being conducted regarding the addresses of foreigners living in our country?

In how many addresses has such an inspection been carried out since January 2024?

How many people have been identified as not living at the specified address despite appearing there as a result of these inspections?

Has any action been taken regarding these individuals?"
