Former Search and Rescue Association (AKUT) President Nasuh Mahruki has been arrested after appearing at the Istanbul Courthouse to provide his statement to the prosecutor as part of an investigation launched over his post regarding the Supreme Election Council (YSK). Journalist Nasuh Bektaş, a close friend of Mahruki, who was arrested on the grounds of "publicly disseminating misleading information," spoke to 12punto. Bektaş explained the roadmap they will follow in the coming days to have the decision overturned.
“THE DECISION STEMS FROM THE GOVERNMENT'S POLITICAL NEEDS”
Starting by stating that they do not accept the decision and recalling the decision to overturn the ruling that deemed the 'rape' threat and insults against Lieutenant Ebru Eroğlu as 'freedom of expression,' Bektaş said, “Finally, in the lieutenants' case, the prosecutor's office initially issued a decision of non-prosecution regarding the individual who insulted Lieutenant Ebru in the harshest way, but that decision was overturned after a journalist friend of ours reflected the issue to the press on social media. In a process where such things are happening, it is impossible to accept that an arrest warrant has been issued for a person like Nasuh Mahruki, who is known by Turkey and has provided many services to Turkey, just because of a post. Nasuh is a person who has already become a national figure in Turkey; there is no suspicion of him fleeing. He went and gave his statement himself, yet the fact that an arrest warrant was issued stems from the government's political needs. There is no other reason. Given the development of the event, the police showing up at his door within two hours of him making the post shows how quickly the law works for some, while in cases like the newborn gang scandal, the law is delayed. This proves that things are being run politically.”
“A HEAVY BLOW IS BEING DEALT TO TURKEY”
Expressing that Turkey's reputation in the world will be damaged, Bektaş stated, “This will not be a good mark for Turkey globally either. Because Nasuh is a person known worldwide. The arrest of a person who is known as the 'snow leopard' in Russia, who is famous as the first Turk to climb Everest, and who continued to save lives in the 1999 earthquake despite losing his own mother, unfortunately deals a heavy blow to the country.”
“THERE WILL BE A DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT TO MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD”
Regarding the roadmap they will follow in the next phase, he stated, “Since I am known as his close friend, I have received many messages of support today. The conscience of society has been wounded, and therefore messages saying 'We are ready to do whatever is necessary for Nasuh' have arrived. In the coming days, we will express every kind of democratic reaction we can to have this unjust decision overturned. After consulting with the family, there will certainly be a democratic movement to make our voices heard.”
