Dani Alves sentenced to prison for sexual assault

The Barcelona Provincial Court has sentenced Dani Alves, who has been in custody for over a year and faced up to 12 years in prison, to 4 years and 6 months in prison, 5 years of supervised release, a 9-year restraining order from the victim, and a fine of 150,000 euros.

Under legal procedures in Spain, this court decision is not final, and Alves has the right to appeal first to the High Court of Justice of Catalonia and subsequently to the Supreme Court of Spain.

ARRESTED LAST YEAR

Accused of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman in the bathroom of a nightclub in Barcelona on the night of December 30, 2022, Alves was detained on January 20, 2023, after arriving in Barcelona from Mexico, and was subsequently arrested by the court.

The 40-year-old Alves, who changed his testimony three times and finally stated that he "lied in his initial statements to hide his infidelity from his wife and protect her by admitting to sexual intercourse," was transferred from Brains 1 Prison to Brains 2 Prison on January 23 for security reasons.

Alves, who played for teams such as Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, and Sao Paulo during his career, had his contract terminated by the Mexican club UNAM, his last team, following his arrest.
