Ece İrtem's mother recounts her daughter's final night: 'She looked me right in the eye and read this poem to me'

Following the death of actress Ece İrtem on June 15, known for productions such as “Şeref Meselesi”, “O Hayat Benim”, “Kertenkele”, “Kaçın Kurası”, “Bay Yanlış”, and “Mahkum”, her mother Nuriye İrtem has made statements regarding the process they have been through.

Speaking to Alev Gürsoy Cimin from Posta, Nuriye İrtem reacted to the allegations that emerged after her daughter's death; she recounted the final night, which coincided with Ece İrtem's birthday, what they experienced in the morning, and her daughter's passion for acting that had persisted since her childhood.

“MY PAIN NEVER SUBSIDES”

Describing the void she feels after her daughter's passing, Nuriye İrtem stated, “I don't know, my pain never subsides. It is so difficult that it cannot be described in words. I am in a great void. My Ece was an angel. And I have lost my angel.”

Mother İrtem said that the reports in the media claiming that “alcohol was mixed with antidepressants” were not true. Stating that her daughter was a very conscious person, İrtem said, “Ece was never someone who drank a lot. She was a very conscious girl and she did everything with that awareness. I have never seen her drink heavily to this day.”

RECOUNTING THE FINAL NIGHT

According to Nuriye İrtem's account, the mother and daughter were at home on Ece İrtem's birthday. İrtem said that her daughter spoke with her aunts and father, and then they walked the dogs. She stated that they later went to a venue near their home.

Stating that there was another birthday celebration at the venue, İrtem explained that she wanted to buy a cake for her daughter but learned that the cake had been brought from outside. Saying that Ece İrtem then placed an order from her phone, the mother recounted that her daughter said, “Let's leave the dogs at home and dance to Greek music.”

Explaining that an announcement was made after the cake arrived and Ece İrtem took the microphone, Nuriye İrtem said that instead of singing a song, her daughter read Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı's poem “Thirty-Five Years”. İrtem said, “She looked me right in the eye and read this poem to me.”

Nuriye İrtem stated that shortly after, her daughter mentioned having a stomach ache and wanted to return home. Mother İrtem also denied the allegations that Ece İrtem was drunk that night or had difficulty standing.

“MY DARLING WAS COLD AS ICE”

Nuriye İrtem, who said she entered her daughter's room in the morning to ask what she would like for breakfast, described that moment with the words, “She didn't answer my voice. My darling was cold as ice.” Stating that there was no known heart condition, İrtem said that her daughter took care of her health and that they had recently scheduled an appointment for a check-up.

Nuriye İrtem also explained that her daughter had been interested in acting since childhood. Recounting that Ece İrtem was influenced when she saw child actors on television at a young age and told her father, “I want to act like this too,” the mother said, “Acting was inside her since she was a child.”

Nuriye İrtem, who said that Ece İrtem sometimes felt that she was being treated unfairly, explained that her daughter would ask, “Mom, am I ugly? Mom, am I untalented?” and that she always supported her. Mother İrtem stated that her daughter would say, “I will always stand tall.”

Touching upon the news about a monkey bite that allegedly occurred during a vacation in Thailand, Nuriye İrtem said that such an incident was true, but that Ece İrtem had received rabies and tetanus vaccinations there and used medication.

Mother İrtem reacted once again to the allegations that her daughter used alcohol, saying, “My daughter was never an alcoholic or anything like that. She wasn't drinking! She didn't drink that day either.” Stating that Ece İrtem's father is also experiencing great pain, Nuriye İrtem recounted him crying with the words, “Oh my Ece, everyone fit into this world, could you not fit?”

Nuriye İrtem also objected to the statements allegedly made on her behalf following her daughter's death. Stating that she was not in a condition to speak that morning, İrtem reacted by saying, “My world has gone dark, would I be making a statement in that state?”

Saying that Ece İrtem was a happy child, Nuriye İrtem explained that her daughter was the apple of the family's eye. Stating that her father is also trying to support her despite his pain, İrtem said, “He knows that if he lets himself go, I will be completely finished.”

Stating that she does not hold any resentment regarding the attendance at the funeral or the people around her, Nuriye İrtem said, “My daughter is gone, am I going to worry about that? My only sorrow is that my princess is gone.” Stating that she cannot enter her home in Istanbul, the mother said, “Everything of Ece's is there. How can my heart bear it?”
