Gezi Park returns to Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality

Gezi Park has returned to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality following a court decision. The Istanbul 1st Civil Court of First Instance found that the transfer of Gezi Park in Taksim, Istanbul, to the Sultan Beyazıt Hanı Veli Hazretleri Foundation by the General Directorate of Foundations on March 12, 2021, was unlawful.

Gezi Park returns to Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality

The legal battle initiated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) regarding the transfer of the ownership of Taksim Gezi Park to the Sultan Bayezid Foundation has concluded.

The Istanbul 1st Civil Court of First Instance overturned the registration decision made by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's General Directorate of Foundations in favor of the foundation.

Pointing out that the properties in question were not created through a foundation, the court ruled for the re-registration of the park in the name of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Gezi Park, which was owned by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), was removed from the municipality's possession by the General Directorate of Foundations, which claimed that the conditions listed in Article 30 of the Law on Foundations were met.

It was registered in the land registry in the name of the Sultan Beyazıt Hanı Veli Hazretleri Foundation on March 12, 2021. The IMM immediately sought legal recourse. It filed a lawsuit on April 9, 2021, claiming that the registration process was unlawful.

The case was heard by the Istanbul 1st Civil Court of First Instance.
