Hanri Benazus has passed away

Author Hanri Benazus, known for the books he wrote about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his collection of thousands of Atatürk photographs, has passed away at the age of 94.

The news of Benazus's death was announced by Cevat Maruflu on behalf of the Platform for Those Who Love İzmir.

Benazus will be laid to rest tomorrow at the Altındağ Jewish Cemetery following the noon prayer.

WHO IS HANRİ BENAZUS?

Hanri Benazus was born on March 27, 1930, in İzmir. After graduating from İzmir Atatürk High School, Benazus was unable to complete his higher education due to financial difficulties.

Benazus, who pioneered industrial poultry farming in Turkey with the company he founded in the 1960s, served as the president of Altay Sports Club between 1985 and 1987.

On October 9, 1937, at the age of 7, he met Atatürk in the town of Ortaklar in Aydın and took chickpeas from his table. Following that day, he dedicated his life to telling the story of Atatürk and the Republic he envisioned.

Since 1947, he amassed a vast collection consisting of a total of 20,000 Atatürk photographs, with the location and date of 10,000 of them being known.

He created a visual archive of the Gallipoli Campaign with 900 frames of photographs he obtained from war archives in New Zealand, Sydney, Canberra, London, Paris, and Berlin.

He donated copies of Atatürk photographs that he collected from Greek, French, and British archives, from war correspondents in many countries, and individually from the USA to numerous institutions.

He donated his 20,000-frame collection to the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality in December 2021.

He opened exhibitions and gave lectures at thousands of institutions and organizations, including the House of Commons in London and the parliament in Paris.
