No university degree needed for this profession: It earns 3.5 million TL annually
Job security concerns driven by artificial intelligence are radically changing the career choices of young people; train driving, which does not require a university degree, has come to the fore with its high income.
The rapid advancement of technology and growing fears of unemployment have pushed young people in the UK to reconsider their traditional career expectations. Popular professions such as law, acting, or being a YouTuber have now been replaced by a different occupation: train driving. In a study by Remitly analyzing Google data from over 140 countries, train driving emerged as the most searched profession in the UK under the query "How to become a...". This field has surpassed the interest in content creation.
Attracting attention with its promise of high income, train driving is also a career opportunity that does not require a university degree. Employers recruit candidates directly and enroll them in a paid training program lasting 12 to 18 months. Those starting the training earn 27-36 thousand pounds annually, while the average annual salary after training reaches 56 thousand pounds (approximately 3.5 million TL).
Another factor increasing the appeal of train driving is that the profession is considered one of the safe zones against the threat of artificial intelligence. In surveys, 73% of young people express concern about not being able to find a job in the coming years. Train driving is cited as one of the few professions that offer employment security despite technological transformations.
Unlike white-collar jobs, in train driving, work stays at the workplace when the shift ends, and employees do not carry work stress home. In addition to this, strong union rights and career paths open to advancement are some of the reasons why the profession is preferred.
The application requirements for those who want to become a train driver are listed as follows: Candidates must be at least 21 years old and have basic knowledge of English and mathematics. Furthermore, they are required to pass vision and hearing tests, comprehensive health checks, and successfully complete drug/alcohol screenings.
In the UK, young people have begun to see train driving as a new career gateway due to job security and the possibility of attractive earnings.
