Roman-era Sinobiç ruins face the threat of extinction

Sinobiç, located 3 kilometers north of the Mut district of Mersin within the borders of Yeşilyurt village, is known to be an important early Christian center where Saint Paul preached and which is mentioned in the Bible.

There are numerous sarcophagi from the Roman and early Byzantine periods, two water cisterns, wall ruins, and rock tombs located here.

The Roman-era Sinobiç ruins, which have been in a dilapidated state for years due to neglect and lack of interest, have also been targeted by treasure hunters.

'IT HAS REACHED THE POINT OF EXTINCTION'

Providing information about the Sinobiç ruins, Yeşilyurt Neighborhood Headman Erol Bıçkı stated that the Sinobiç ruins, which are within the borders of Yeşilyurt village 3 kilometers north of the Mut district, are specifically located in the Ardıçtepe area, noting, "There are a large number of sarcophagi from the Roman period, as well as 2 water cisterns and wall ruins on the hill. The ancient name of Sinobiç, which is referred to as Dolisandos in some sources, is not definitively known.

Due to neglect and abandonment, a piece of history has reached the point of extinction. It has especially been subjected to attacks by treasure hunters. We want the relevant authorities to take ownership of this place and place it under protection as soon as possible," he said.
