Statement from Serdar Ortaç on Ahmet Kaya: 'He knew he would be arrested'

At the awards ceremony organized by the Magazine Journalists Association in 1999, Ahmet Kaya was attacked after saying, "I want to sing a song in Kurdish," and forks and knives were thrown at the artist by some people in the hall.

Serdar Ortaç, who was among those who reacted to Kaya and is remembered for the footage of him jumping on stage that night to sing the National Anthem, had apologized years later.

The famous pop singer expressed his regret regarding the matter once again during an online broadcast with social media influencer Reşit Bozdağ.

Saying "May God damn me a thousand times," Ortaç revealed that his mother is from Urfa and is Kurdish.

Serdar Ortaç said, "In 1970, we couldn't even say hello in Kurdish. My mother is from Urfa, she used to teach me Kurdish, we couldn't speak it. Everyone can make mistakes. I want to cut myself when I go back to that year."

The singer also spoke about Ahmet Kaya as follows:

"But look at the late artist, will you? That year, the guy went up on stage and did it. He did it despite everyone. He knew he would be arrested. He did it. What courage, right? Because his music was very beautiful."
